Overstimulated Mom? 6 Real Ways to Recharge and Breathe Again
Listen—I adore my family. I really do.
But if I hear “MAMA!” one more time, I might just hide in the closet and cry into my cold cup of coffee.
Sound familiar?
Touched out. Talked out. Peopled out. Just done.
If you’re an overstimulated mom, this survival guide is for you. From one frazzled mama to another—here are six things that almost always help me reset. 🫠

1. Start With Prayer (Even the Messy Kind)
Here’s the truth: prayer doesn’t have to be pretty.
Sometimes it’s just: “Lord, HELP ME!” 😭
And guess what? That still counts.
Most days, I’ll sneak into my room—with full-blown chaos still happening in the kitchen—close my eyes, and talk to Jesus. No filter. No fluff. Just me and the One who gets it.
Because when no one else understands your overwhelm—He does. 🙏🏼
When I’m spiraling into burnout, I drop to my knees, tears and all, and pray: “Jesus, take the wheel!” Because clearly, I’ve been steering straight into a wall of burnout and Cheerios. 🛞🥣
Today is hard. And that’s okay to admit. ❤️
2. Ground Yourself (Quick Calm for Overstimulated Moms)
Grounding sounds fancy, but it’s really just about getting back in touch with the basics — your body, your breath, and the moment you’re in.
- Feel your feet on the floor.
- Name 3 things you can see.
- Put down your phone (ouch, I know). 📵
Sometimes I grab a hot mug ☕, step onto the porch for just 2–3 minutes, and let the world slow down. My nervous system is fried, my patience is on backorder, and I need to feel human again.
Ten slow breaths with my feet touching the ground = instant reset.
The leaves rustling 🍃, the sunlight flickering 🌞, the clouds rolling ☁️—it reminds me life is bigger than the chaos in my kitchen.
3. Don’t Forget to Breathe (Your Mom Brain Needs It)
When LEGOs are flying like confetti 🎉 and someone’s already asking “What’s for dinner?” at 9 AM, my body thinks I’m being chased by a bear. 🐻
That’s fight-or-flight mode. And it’s exhausting.
Before I know it, I’m snapping at everyone because the mess + noise + notifications built up until I exploded.
Pause, Mama. Breathe. 🧘♀️
Try this rhythm: In for 4, hold for 4, out for 6.
It tells your body:
“You’re safe. You’re not in a jungle. You’re just in the living room—with LEGOs. And crackers. Everywhere.” 😵💫
4. Do One Happy Little Thing (Just for YOU)
Self care for moms doesn’t have to mean a spa day. Sometimes it’s tiny joys:
- Slap on a face mask.
- Drink hot tea without reheating it 4 times.
- Watch that mindless show you love.
- Pop into a consignment shop and score a little treasure. (Warning: you might get hooked 😅)
The point? Give your brain permission to unwind from the endless cycle of cooking, cleaning, and “MAMA!”
5. Operation Solo Time (AKA Send Them Fishing)
Our boys love fishing, so sometimes I declare: Fishing day for the boys! If Dad’s busy, I call Grandpa.
Last week, it was the little one’s first fishing trip. Cue my mama heart spiraling because there was a windstorm and no cell service. 😵💫 But they came home safe, my little guy bursting through the door: “MAMA! I caught a BIG fish!” 🎣
They had fun. I had peace. Everyone won.
Even 30 minutes of solo time at home—just folding laundry without someone crying behind me—counts as recharge time.
6. Get Out of the House (Nature Heals, Every Time)
When the walls start closing in, sometimes the best reset is leaving them.
Nature = healing. 🌿
Even sitting on a patch of grass with a breeze can reset your mood.
But if you can? Ask Dad (or a friend) to watch the crew 1 hour so you can sneak away for solo time.
I’ll grab my keys, throw on whatever doesn’t smell like ketchup, and head out. Sometimes it’s just a grocery run. Sometimes it’s a quiet park.
The point is: I breathe deeper when I step outside. And when I come back? I’m a little calmer, a little clearer, and a whole lot more me. 💛
Final Thought
Mama, you weren’t designed to run on empty.
Self care for moms isn’t selfish—it’s survival.
So when you feel like an overstimulated mom—touched out, talked out, tapped out—remember:
Prayer. Grounding. Breathing. Small joys. Solo time. Fresh air.
Simple steps, powerful impact.
You’ve got this—even when you don’t feel like you do.

Lily
